I needed a day to let it sink in. The 2008 has come to an end. A 23-14 loss to the Steelers in Pittsburgh has closed the book on this Cinderella story.
Back in September, who could have imagined a team with a rookie QB and a rookie head coach coming off a 5-11 season in 2007 would go to the AFC title game? After 2007, the Ravens lost Jonathan Ogden and Steve McNair to retirement while Brian Billick got the boot. What a miraculous turnaround in only 12 months. None of us, not even the most ardent of fan, could have predicted this in such a short amount of time.
And while we are saddened by the ending of the season, we need to focus our attention to the future. Defensive genius Rex Ryan is leaving to become an NFL head coach. Terrell Suggs, Bart Scott and Ray Lewis are all free agents. It is quite possible that next year our squad will look radically different.
The off season for the NFL will begin after the Pro Bowl. Trades, free agent signings, and preparing for the draft will all commence soon. The 2008 season will be one to remember for sure in the short history of the Baltimore Ravens franchise. Let's take this momentum and build on it. This is a team that could and should be in the hunt again next year. We'll be back.
By the way, Go Cardinals!
