Out with the old...

Written by: Peter Coolbaugh

And so it begins, the breakup of the team that we loved so much. It comes down to age, money, and chemistry. That is professional sports for you. Not all things last and we know it.

Chris McAllister was the first big name to be cut loose. One of the last three remaining players from the 2000 Championship team, but the one who seemed to be the most expendable. Injuries, attitude, and a decline in production led to his being let go. Who is next? Let us take a few guesses here...

Samari Rolle? Todd Heap? Trevor Pryce? Kyle Boller? Who do we need and who can we easily replace? Not questions that can be answered so easily. What about Derrick Mason, a 35 year old WR?

That list does not include the free agents who we have yet to sign. Ray Lewis (who I will look at in a further column later) and Bart Scott need to be signed or allowed to walk. The franchise tag has been put on Terrell Suggs has been franchised again, so we know at least he will be back.

Next year's core team could look a little different. Is it smart to chop up a team that went to the AFC title game or is it better to replace the parts now that are wearing down before the truck itself dies? I am sure that Ozzie Newsome knows what he is doing. In fact, his track record says he is quite capable at building a winner.

The Super Bowl just ended and the free agency period is about to start. We already lost defensive guru Rex Ryan to the JETS. I fear that the worst is yet to come.

Hang on to your helmets folks as the off season puzzle assembly is about to begin.
