Why I am not worried about losing Rex Ryan……

By Mike Griffith

When I listen to the entire national media break down the 2009 ravens, the thing they harp on the most is the loss of Rex Ryan and of Bart Scott. Well boys and girls, I am not worried at all.

The Ravens have had 4 defensive coordinators over the previous 8 years, Marvin Lewis, Mike Noland, Jack Del Rio and Rex Ryan. Between all 4, the Ravens have not finished lower then 6th in overall defense. The one constant has been Ozzie Newsome (I bet you thought I was going to say Ray Lewis). Ozzie has done an amazing job of finding personnel who can fit the scheme of the defense. Great role players who do a great job, in recent years names like Cory Ivy (Free agent), Jim Leonard (Free Agent) and Will Demps (Undrafted free agent) come to mind. Drafting Adalius Thomas in the 6th and Kelly Gregg in the 6th round of the draft. That doesn’t even get into all the big name players they have drafted/signed. Greg Mattison, the Ravens new defensive coordinator, will do a great job, he’s a very experienced coach that is well liked. He had a lot of great football minds around him and it doesn’t hurt to have at least two hall of fame players on your defense.

Oh, and for all of you who are worried about losing Bart Scott, do you remember Ed Hartwell who wore #56? Who played inside linebacker next to Ray Lewis for a few years? Who signed a big free agent contract with another team? Who when not in the Ravens scheme and playing next to Ray fell off the face of the earth? Who just a few years later out of football? The guy Bart Scott replaced?

Exactly…. I am not worried either.
